Senate, House Bills on Advance Care Plans Represent Significant Step Forward

Zucker: “We commend Senator Coons and Representative Black for their leadership.”

DALLAS – In a significant step forward in the effort to empower consumers to have their voices heard in their health care, Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.) and U.S. Representative Diane Black (R-Tenn.) introduced bicameral and bipartisan legislation today that incentivizes digital advance care planning. The legislation encourages individuals to provide clear guidance to their medical providers and family members about their health care decisions.

“Emergency, critical and advance care plans give each of us a voice when we’re unable to speak for ourselves,” said Jeff Zucker, CEO of MyDirectives, the world’s first all-digital emergency, critical and advance care planning platform. “They empower us and spur important conversations with our loved ones. We challenge all health insurance payers to follow suit and help their members and families have the same confidence they won’t lose their voice in their care in the event of a health crisis.”

Digital tools help improve healthcare, enabling a person’s priorities to be available anytime, anywhere and are easy to create and update. MyDirectives’ easy-to-use digital platform captures healthcare wishes for people in the event they cannot make decisions for themselves.

“This legislation will give Americans the tools and encouragement to document their healthcare wishes,” said Dr. Molly Coye, Social Entrepreneur in Residence at the Network for Excellence in Health Innovation and former Chief Innovation Officer of the UCLA Health System. “It’s 2015 and time to leave behind our antiquated paper directives and use digital, easily accessible and up-dateable options whenever possible to share our wishes with loved ones and our medical teams.”

Today’s legislation encourages millions of Americans to take control of their healthcare decisions and have their voices heard and is celebrated and welcomed by medical directive experts and emergency health care leaders across the country.

“Digital medical directives are the most effective way to make personal healthcare wishes rapidly and reliably known to providers,” said Dr. Monica Williams-Murphy, a medical directives expert, emergency physician, and medical director for advance care planning at the nation’s third largest publicly owned health system, Huntsville Hospital health system. She continued, “Critical conversations about healthcare wishes must occur prior to times of crisis. This legislation is an important first step in moving forward open, honest conversations in healthcare so that consumers are making wisely considered choices based on their own beliefs and values.”

In closing, Zucker added, “We commend Senator Coons and Congressman Black for their leadership in encouraging all Americans and their families to take control of their healthcare decisions.”

Original co-sponsors to the legislation include Senators Chris Coons and Bill Cassidy (R-La.) and U.S. Representatives Diane Black, Mike Thompson (D-Calif.) and Chris Collins (R-NY) and Peter Welch (D-Vt.).
